Tax rate

The multiplier applied to your taxable value, set by the bodies that tax you.

Expressed as a percentage, a rate per $100, or in mills depending on the state. Your total rate is the sum of every district that taxes the parcel — school, city, county, and often several more.

You cannot appeal the rate. You can appeal the value it is applied to, which is the only lever an individual homeowner has.

Because rates are composite, two houses a street apart can carry different total rates if they sit in different districts.
